Our favourite things: This gift is all about seasonal warmth

In the depths of January, a cosy pair of slipper socks might be just what the foot doctor ordered.

“It’s not the gift, but the thought that counts.”

So wrote author Henry van Dyke in a reflection on the kindness of the act being more important than the monetary value of the present.

And during this season of goodwill toward others, it’s about the wholesome spirit of giving and the universal love — and warmth — that comes with it.

With the latter in mind, here’s a gift that will provide lots of warmth all around and won’t break your credit card or your child’s piggy bank: thick, warm, fleece-lined slipper socks.

They can be had with “Sherpa lining” and non-skid soles for as little as $4 at the dollar store, which makes for a thoughtful gift from a child stretching their allowance to buy presents.

A child may not realize it, but keeping one’s feet warm in the winter is important for overall good health. Cold feet can weaken your immune system and aggravate some health conditions. In the depths of January, when home heating systems are struggling against the frigid weather, a cosy pair of slipper socks might be just what the foot doctor ordered.

You can pay much more, of course, and buy them in sets. They come in all kinds of cute colours and patterns — from snowflakes and reindeer to plaid and plain.

No matter the quality, don’t expect them to last for years: the silicon rubber grips will wear out. Why not make it a tradition and give that special someone slipper socks every year?
