Peter Polansky falls in second round of U.S. Open qualifying

Thornhill, Ont.’s Peter Polansky lost to Sumit Nagal of India 7-5, 7-6 (0) Thursday in the second round of qualifying for the U.S. Open tennis championships in New York. The only Canadian still alive in the qualifying is Toronto native Steven Diez. He plays third-seeded Soon-woo Kwon of Korea Friday with the winner advancing to the main draw.

Montrealer Félix Auger-Aliassime heads a list of a record five Canadians men who received direct entry in the men’s draw. The others are Denis Shapovalov, who will play Auger-Aliassime in the first round, Milos Raonic, Vasek Pospisil and Brayden Schnur. Montrealer Eugenie Bouchard and Bianca Andreescu received direct entries into the women’s draw.
