Quebec expands admissions to medical schools by more than 100

The Quebec government will create 139 new spots in medical schools over the course of the next three years.

The initiative will increase the chances for a person to become a medical doctor at Quebec schools. For the next school year, 71 additional admissions will be created bringing the total to 901. By the third year, the total number of admission will be 969.

The goal is to produce more medical doctors who would remain and work in Quebec after they graduate. The number of new admissions was based on the capacity to train people in the province’s medical facilities.

The number of admissions available to students applying from outside the province will be limited to 62 for the 2020-2021 school year.

In a release, Minister of Health and Social Services Danielle McCann said the creation of the new admissions is intended to address a lack of medical personnel in Quebec especially for its aging population. She noted that the current pandemic crisis, which hit more than 300 elderly residences across the province, “demonstrated the importance of correcting this situation.”
