Hernandez beat the throw of shortstop Tim Anderson, who got to the ball in the hole but couldn’t get the runner on a jump throw to first. Andrew Benintendi came home after starting the inning with a double off Jace Fry (1-3) as the Red Sox battled back to tie the score on three separate occasions in the late innings.

Eduardo Nunez was responsible for two of the rallies, including an RBI single grounded through the infield in the eighth inning to knot the score at 5.

Brandon Workman (7-1) got the win, striking out Anderson (four K’s) with a runner on second to end the top of the ninth. It was the only batter Workman faced.

The White Sox went ahead 4-3 in the seventh when Yonder Alonso, who entered with only three hits in 27 at-bats this month, followed a Yoan Moncada intentional walk with an RBI single to right. Yolmer Sanchez added another run on a single two pitches later, but Boston wouldn’t waste any time coming back.

Mookie Betts crushed the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh for his 17th home run to make it 5-4.

After Jose Abreu put Chicago ahead 3-2 on a solo homer in the top of the sixth, Boston knotted the score in the bottom of the frame. White Sox starter Lucas Giolito intentionally walked Jackie Bradley Jr. to load the bases with one out, and after a strikeout, walked Michael Chavis on a pitch nowhere near the zone for a 3-3 tie.

Evan Marshall came on and struck out Nunez on three pitches to end the threat.

Giolito gave up three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings, walking four and striking out seven.

Moncada got the scoring started with a two-run homer in the second — his 13th of the season and first from the right side of the plate. Bradley got a run back for the Red Sox on a solo shot, his eighth, in the bottom of the inning.

Boston made it 2-2 on a Nunez RBI single in the fifth.

Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez allowed five runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
