Report: 2 Wisconsin QBs test positive for COVID-19

The identity of Wisconsin’s quarterback for its Saturday game at Nebraska is uncertain after the current starter and his backup both tested positive for COVID-19, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Monday.

Badgers coach Paul Chryst would not discuss reports that Graham Mertz tested positive for COVID-19 or address the redshirt freshman’s status for Saturday on Monday. Later in the day, the newspaper cited a source as saying redshirt sophomore Chase Wolf also tested positive for the virus.

“I will not, cannot and should not therefore comment about anything dealing with our testing and coronavirus,” Chryst told reporters Monday.

The Journal Sentinel cited two sources in reporting that Mertz, who completed 20 of 21 passes for 248 yards in the 45-7 win, tested positive. One of those sources said the first test was on Saturday.

If the second result is positive, Mertz would be sidelined for 21 days, meaning he would miss the Badgers’ next three games — at Nebraska, home against Purdue and at No. 13 Michigan.

Among Big Ten protocols set up before the start of the delayed season, a positive result of a point of contact test, presumably the first test Mertz would have taken, is followed by a polymerase chain reaction test as a confirmation.
