Road safety concerns mount as daylight dwindles: Study

As the weather turns colder and the days get shorter many motorists start to fear for road safety.

The end of Daylight-Saving Time approaching, and with it often comes a number of road safety concerns that GTA road users have this time of year.

According to a TruceTO study commissioned by RSA Canada and Gallagher Insurance, half of cyclists, 44% of pedestrians and 44% of drivers say they don’t feel safe on the roads.

The top fall road hazard concerns in the GTA as daylight savings ends Nov. 1 include frost making for slippery roads, sun glare and shorter daylight hours.

On average 65% of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians agree that road user behaviour change and infrastructure improvements are needed for safer streets.

Other survey findings include the driving hazards related to daylight savings and the impact on road users’ safety.

Thirty per cent of those in the GTA are all for higher fines for speeding, jaywalking and impaired driving.

Another 13% are looking for road design improvements and 12% say there is a need for further education on rules and safety issues.

“Despite the fact that speed is one of the top reasons for injuries and fatalities on the streets and continues to be a major problem in the GTA, 60% of road users actually feel that the biggest threat on Toronto streets is distracted driving, followed by reckless driving, distracted walking, and then driving too fast,” the survey said.
