Russian domestic air traffic up 5.7% y/y in August despite pandemic

MOSCOW — The number of Russians flying on domestic flights rose 5.7% year on year in August to 8.57 million people, the civil aviation authority said on Friday, despite the pandemic which has slashed air traffic volumes across the world.

Russia grounded international flights over the pandemic and has only resumed some routes, moves that prompted an increase in demand for domestic tourism and domestic flights.

Total airline traffic, including international flights, stood at 9.3 million people last month, down 35% from a year earlier, the aviation authority said. (Reporting by Gleb Stolyarov; writing by Tom Balmforth; editing by Jason Neely)
