Sask. NDP urges children and youth advocates to investigate government response to private schools

More than 40 students filed allegations of abuse while at the Christian Center Academy, now named Legacy Christian Academy.

Last week, education minister Dustin Duncan announced many changes.

Legacy Christian Academy and two of her other accredited private schools now have administrators, and more unannounced inspections are expected.

Duncan said two other schools, Grace Christian School and Regent Academy, filed $25 million lawsuits alleging physical and sexual abuse against individuals associated with those two schools. Since he was nominated, it is said that the supervision will be strengthened.

NDP leader Karla Beck said the official opposition would not investigate surveillance of these schools by supporters. He said he believed it was within his authority.

A former LCA student also spoke at a press conference on Thursday.

Stephanie Hutchinson called Duncan's reaction to the allegations "baffling" and "disappointing".

"It is unacceptable. Some of these individuals are currently facing numerous child abuse allegations and are preparing to accept new students in just a few weeks," said Hutchinson.

Caitlin Erickson said former students also wanted to meet Duncan. Duncan is "basically unresponsive at this point," she says.

"In addition to nearly 40 students, 18 of her students who have contacted me are preparing statements and preparing to go to the police," Erickson said.

Erickson claimed that some students who recently attended school came forward.

"We want to take some action at this point because this is an issue that plagues everyone," Ericsson said.
