ST-CÔME — Six Canadians, including three Quebecers, advanced to the round of 16 of the Freestyle Skiing World Cup in St-Côme on Saturday.

Mikaël Kingsbury of Ste-Agathe-des-Monts, Louis-David Chalifoux of Quebec City, Julien Viel and Elliot Vaillancourt of Drummondville for the men, as well as Maia Schwinghammer and Berkley Brown for the women will be competing Sunday.

The road to the quarter-finals will, however, be more difficult for some: Chalifoux will have to fight a duel against compatriot Kingsbury; Viel will have to rub shoulders with the gold medalist of the Beijing Games, Sweden’s Walter Wallberg; while Vaillancourt will face the Japanese Ikuma Horishima, holder of the yellow jersey.

Brown will also have his hands full against the Frenchwoman Perrine Laffont, who fell to Laurianne Desmarais-Gilbert in the preliminaries.

Schwinghammer will have to negotiate with seventh-ranked American Olivia Giacco.

The road stopped in the round of 16 for Canadians Brendan Kelly, Gabriel Dufresne of Repentigny, Kerrian Chunlaud and Samuel Goodison.

Among the women, in addition to Desmarais-Gilbert, Jessica Linton was also excluded on her first run.
