Police and emergency responders arrived in the area after receiving calls at 8:53 p.m. about people being injured, said the Ottawa Police Service in a statement Thursday morning.
One man was dead when police arrived, said the statement. The second man had critical injuries and was taken to hospital, where he died.
A third man was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries and released.
Police identified the deceased men as Krishel Kanin Murphy-Nimblett, 28, and Mohamed Omar Mohamed, 23, both of Ottawa.
The shooting was in a parking lot in a plaza at the intersection of Tompkins Avenue and Tenth Line Road, according to Mussa Siddiqui, the owner of the African BBQ House there.
The building in the plaza containing his restaurant also has a Circle K convenience store.
“They were on the side of the building and one of them came running to us and said that they had been shot,” said Siddiqui. “They came to the parking lot, that’s where the guy collapsed.”
Siddiqui said he was at the Circle K convenience store in the plaza at the time.
