Calgary — WestJet Airlines Ltd.'s Chief Executive Officer states that there will be 32% fewer flights to and from Toronto Pearson International Airport in July than in 2019.

Alexis von Hoensbroech The Calgary-based airline says it has made a series of aggressive schedule shortenings between March and May.

He says Toronto saw most of the cut as WestJet expected groaning and delays at Canada's largest airport this summer.

With the removal of public health restrictions on COVID-19, the entire travel industry is struggling to recover to meet the surge in demand.

Most domestic flights to Canada's busiest airports have been delayed or canceled in the past week due to the nationwide impact of overloaded networks. According to

Von Hoensbroech, WestJet is in a better position than its competitors to survive the storm, as airports in western Canada face far fewer challenges. Still, he says he expects the rest of the summer to be very difficult for airlines.
