About this episode of the Global News Podcast What's going on...? Erica Vella's Pulitzer Prize winning photo Examining The Terror of War. This photo is commonly referred to as "Napalm Girl". She talks to Kim Phuc, the girl in her photo, and learns that she miraculously survived.

Fifty years ago, Kim Phuc Phan Thi's life seemed simple. She lived with her family in Chang Bang Village, Vietnam.

The country was in the midst of war, but as a child of nine she knew nothing had changed.

"The sounds of war were unreal to me. Far, far, far," she said.

"For me, it was all just fun."

Everything changed in June 1972 when a few napalm bombs fell on her peaceful village. I was.

Phuc has vivid memories of that day.

"I saw the plane go so fast (and) so loud...and I was standing there. I didn't run. and saw four bombs landing," she said.

In excruciating pain, Phuc began running down the village highway. That's when AP photographer Nick Ut snapped a picture of her 9-year-old girl.

After taking pictures in Utah, he rushed to the aid of a badly burned Phuc. Her photographer took her to her local hospital to treat her.

Although hospital staff initially turned her hook away and told her to go to Saigon for treatment. , Yut asked someone to take care of her little girl.
