A national monument is erected today at Dieppe Gardens in Windsor to commemorate the Canadians who died in the bloody raid on Dieppe 80 years ago.
Veterans Affairs Canada will host the event at 78 Riverside Dr. W., broadcast live by CBC News. The parade to the event begins at 11:30am and the event itself begins at 12:10pm.
Join John L. Date, one of his last surviving members of the Dieppe raid. Also invited are World War II veterans David Adlington, Arthur Boone and Charles Davis.
Ontario's Lieutenant Governor and numerous military and political figures will be present. The Essex and Kent Regimental Association, which lost 121 members in the raid, will also participate.
His two members of the Regiment participate in a ceremony today in Dieppe, France.
In Windsor, the bugler will play Last his post at 1pm, followed by a flyover by the Canadian Aviation Museum's historic aircraft.
Dieppe's raid occurred on 19 August 1942.
The Allies originally planned to land on the coast under cover of darkness. Veterans Affairs Canada.But the landing was delayed. With the attacking force en route, they came across a small German convoy.

Attacks were predominantly Canadian, killing 916 of 4,963. A total of 3,367 casualties were suffered, including 1,946 prisoners of war.
The memorial at the Square du Canada in the town of Dieppe commemorates Canada's contributions .
