Police report 11 people in 10 days for drug driving

Police said Saturday they reported 11 people for driving under the influence of drugs in the past 10 days with three also being over the alcohol limit.

The force said 11 people tested positive for drugs in preliminary tests since April 28, three of them also found to be over the permitted alcohol limit.

One of the three was a motorcycle rider, 32, who clocked 26 microgrammes during a breathalyser. The legal limit for motorcyclists is nine microgrammes.

The other two drivers, 25 and 27, recorded 95 and 55 microgrammes respectively, well over the legal limit of 22μg.

Both were driving without insurance coverage, police said.

Five of the others who tested positive for drugs were also uninsured.

One of them was 18-years-old and was driving without being accompanied by a licensed driver. A 36-year-old had not driver’s licence while a third man, a motorcyclist, 51, was driving with a suspended licence.

Police said the 51-year-old had his licence suspended for nine months last February after he was caught driving under the influence of drugs.

Five of the 11 cases were in Paphos, four in Limassol, and one each in Larnaca and Famagusta.
