Ayrshire couple to deck home in Christmas lights in memory of tragic baby

An Ayrshire couple has decked the halls in tribute to a tragic baby who passed away at just 18 months old.

Jordan Buckland and his fiancé Derrie McAlpine have decorated their Kilmarnock home with over 60 unique Christmas lights, complete with a laser show, a snow machine and a visit from a sweetie van ahead of the big charity switch-on event set for Saturday, December 3.

The fundraiser has been organised as a tribute to Jordan's cousin, baby Joey, who suffered from Krabbe disease, an extremely rare, often fatal, degenerative disorder of the nervous system which occurs in about one in 100,000 births.

Funds raised will go towards Children's Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) in the memory of Joey, who passed away in 2015.

The couple spent an arduous two weeks setting up the winter wonderland.

Jordan said: "CHAS is close to my family's heart because they were a big help to my auntie Linzi and baby Joey.

"We thought this would be a good time to help give back to charity."

Partner Derrie McAlpine added: "The house has been kitted out with around sixty lights so far and it's still to be finished. We're waiting on a few more to be delivered.

"It's taken two weeks to decorate to set everything up.

"Everyone is welcome and we look forward to seeing you all there."

Joey's mum Linzi McKinna added: "I am forever grateful for their support to my son Joey Forte.

"Joey was diagnosed with Krabbe disease a rare genetic condition and CHAS would take us in and provide constant care to allow us to have respite.

"Joey had use of the hydrotherapy pool, we were cared for all day long provided homemade meals and a family room. It felt like our home. The staff and nurses were amazing. Couldn’t do enough for you. A well worthy charity and I’m so grateful to my nephew and Derrie and all who have donated.

"I will never be able to give back what the charity gave to us."

The official switch-on will take place on Saturday, December 3 at 6.30 at 61 Haining Avenue, Kilmarnock. All are welcome to come along.

So far Jordan and Derrie have raised over £600 in Joey's memory. You can donate to the fundraiser here.
