A baby ripped from his mother's womb after her suspected murder has opened his eyes for the first time, according to a student pastor.

Cecilia Garcia, who is helping the child's father Yovani Lopez, said the baby boy opened his eyes in hospital while they were praying for him on Sunday.

The child, from Chicago, US, has no brain function and is on a ventilator, after he was cut from his mum's on April 23.

Marlen Ochoa-Lopez went to a house in the city to pick up some free baby clothes on the day she was allegedly murdered.

It is claimed Clarisa Figueroa was lying in wait and killed the 19-year-old, before cutting the baby from her womb and pretending it was her child.

Yovani Lopez, father of the boy, named Yadiel, is refusing to turn off his son's ventilator and is praying for his recovery.

Cecilia told CNN: "We were just praying and praying and he opened his eyes, and his dad said, 'oh my God, he opened his eyes!'

"We've been blessed, although this is a really bad tragedy, they're such a loving and humble family and it's just so wrong what happened to them."

Yovani, who has another son called Joshua, has started a GoFuneMe page to care for his two boys.

Following her death Marlen was missing for three weeks before her body was found in a rubbish bin behind the suspect's house.

Figueroa had been pretending Yadiel was her baby and even brought him to the hospital, claiming to have given birth on April 23.

Despite not showing any signs that she had recently had a baby no one at the hospital alerted the authorities.

A spokesman for the Advocate Christ Medical Center, where the baby was brought, declined to comment on the case.

Figueroa is charged along with her daughter Desiree, 24, - who is four months pregnant  - and her boyfriend, 40-year-old Piotr Bobak.

Following Friday's hearings the three defendant will return to court on June 3.

At the hearing prosecutors told the court that Figueroa had asked her adult daughter for "help killing a pregnant woman and taking a baby", the Daily Mail repoted.

Despite having her Fallopian tubes tied the 46-year-old had told friends she was pregnant with a baby called Xander.

Marlen had been to the woman's home once before on April 1 when she picked up baby clothes advertised on a Facebook group for women in need.

During that visit, Figueroa told her daughter that she wanted to kill her and steal her baby.

The only reason Marlen escaped with her life that day was that Desiree's boyfriend, who was also there, refused to help them.

Clarisa Figueroa posted on her Facebook page about expecting a baby

According to the lawyers Clarisa passed off the request as an April Fool's joke.

When Marlen returned the boyfriend was not there.

Desiree, who is four months pregnant, turned up the music and showed the teenager a photo album dedicated to Figueroa 's dead son Xander, who died last year.

Distracted by the photos, Marlen didn't notice Figueroa creeping up behind her with an electrical cable which was then wrapped around the 19-year-old's neck.

Piotr Bobak, Clarisa's boyfriend, was charged with concealing a homicide

Once she was dead, Desiree - who had peeled Marlen's fingers from the cable while she was being strangled - brought her mother a butcher's knife, blanket and bucket.

Figueroa then cut the dead girl's belly open "from side to side"  and pulled the baby out, placing him into the bucket.

Documents released by the court claim Desiree Figueroa has 'made a full confession'

She then called 999 and claimed to have had a baby.

Clarisa and Desiree Figueroa were charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery

They found the victim's car and carried out DNA tests on the baby who was still in neonatal intensive care.

Once in custody, Desiree made a full confession.

It is unclear if Bobak or Clarisa have confessed.
