Who is responsible for the leadership contest?

Meanwhile, Boris Johnson remains the caretaker's prime minister. The

contest schedule has been agreed by the 1922 Committee and the Tory Party HQ, and a new Tory leader will be assigned at the party meeting in October.

How does the process work?

If there are multiple candidates, the leadership contest is usually held in two stages.

The 1922 Commission's Executive Committee, together with the Conservative Party Headquarters, will determine the rules and procedures for conducting the contest.

These rules and schedules were announced by the Chairman of the 1922 Committee.

In the first stage, a series of votes will reduce the number of candidates.

If necessary, multiple votes will remove the candidate with the least votes and re-vote the MP until only two candidates remain.

For example, in the 2019 Leadership Contest to replaceTeresamei,Boris Johnsonwas elected leader and the first 10 candidates for the first vote. However, a round of voting was held until only Mr. Johnson andJeremy Huntremained.

What happens then?

At this stage, the two remaining members face a conservative vote.
