Happy Chinese New Year!

The lantern-lined city of Manchester will come alive this weekend with traditional performances and family activities to mark Chinese New Year.

On Sunday, January 26, the colourful dragon parade will take on a new route departing from Manchester Central Library at 12.30pm.

Thousands of spectators are set to follow the 175ft dragon, which will be accompanied by dancers, opera singers, and giant Buddha dolls.

The procession will head from St Peter’s Square, down Peter Street and Oxford Street, before turning on to Portland Street and then Princess Street, before landing in the heart of Chinatown at 2pm.

But of course with any big event in the city, a number of roads will be closed and buses diverted to make way for the celebration.

Transport for Greater Manchester has advised those attending the New Year Parade to take public transport, or walk/cycle.

If you can't avoid driving into the city centre then be aware of the road closures noted below and of increased journey times on the Inner Ring Road between 10am and 5pm.
