Co-op funeral workers vote for strike over wage dispute

Funeral workers at a coffin-manufacturing cooperative voted to strike amid a wage dispute.

The Unite union has confirmed its members have voted for industrial action, with the first week of strikes scheduled for later this month.

Workers are employed at the Govan site, which is the cooperative's sole production site for coffins, and the company operates parlors throughout Lanarkshire.

The union said the dispute was a direct result of the Co-operative Funeral Home's refusal to return to the negotiating table after union members rejected an offer of a final wage of "only 3%."

Unite members voted 96% for him with 86% voter turnout.

The first strike is scheduled for Monday, August 22nd, and will continue daily until Monday, August 29th.

Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham said: left the negotiating table.

"We expect more from organizations that tout themselves as principled and claim to demonstrate a fairer way of doing business.

“They should start by showing that they are different from some of the bad employers.

Willie Thomson, Industry Head at Unite, added:

"Our attempts to constructively work towards a solution have been disdainfully dismissed with a 'take or leave' attitude unacceptable to cooperatives.

“Our members are recognized as essential workers, deserve better from employers who advance social goals and give back to their communities. The worst cost of living in decades. In a crisis, our members deserve better.”

Co-op Funeralcare has been contacted for comment.
