Cyclists may require license plates and insurance under tough new road laws

Cyclists must be insured, have license plates and obey speed limits just like drivers, says Transportation Secretary Grant Shapps. I'm here.

Ministers have hinted at possible changes to some road laws aimed at cracking down on reckless or irresponsible cyclists.

He said we should no longer "turn a blind eye" to cyclists traveling at dangerous speeds or ignoring red lights.

That was after Mr. Shaps vowed to create a "dangerous bicycle death" law that would treat criminals like motorists.

Welwyn Hatfield MP said it was "not true" that a cyclist could exceed the speed limit, especially in the 20 mph he zone, without actually breaking the law.

That's why the Secretary of Transportation says he wants to extend the restrictions to cyclists as well.

"Obviously that leads to questions like: Do you need license plates and insurance? And things like that," he told theDaily Mail.

"That's why I'm suggesting that we should look at insurance overhaul and how we actually track cyclists who break the law."

Motorway Law and Road Traffic Law speed limits apply only to those who drive motor vehicles.

Local governments can impose speed limits on cyclists, but they are rarely enforced.

Department of Transportation officials confirmed that the proposed measure would require cyclists to wear license plates or other identifying marks for enforcement purposes.

"I don't want people to stop riding bikes," said Shaps. He added:

``There has been an explosion of cycling during Covid. I don't know why we should break the road laws, why we should speed up, why we should run red lights and run away. I don't think you should do that, and I'm proposing to set up a review to do just that."

That's because Mr. Shaps said that the "death from dangerous cycling" law is "speeding." It impresses cyclists with the real harm they can cause when combined with lack of attention.”

The move says that cyclists who kill pedestrians can only be jailed for two years. It closes a legal loophole.

Since the government held consultations on the proposed new offense of causing death or serious injury while cycling, Four years have passed. .

Shaps wrote earlier this month in his Mail+ that he believes a "selfish minority" of cyclists is "immune" to red lights.

"We need cycling that equates to death from dangerous driving, filling a gap in the law and impressing cyclists with the real harm they can cause when speed and carelessness are combined." He said.

Current proposals add new legislation to the transportation bill, which is due to be submitted to Congress in the fall.

But Shaps himself may not be taking on the role of current minister next month when the cabinet is reshuffled by a new prime minister.
