The battle of the Christmas adverts has officially begun.

Retailers have been steadily releasing their latest editions over the last few weeks, with the likes of Aldi, Iceland and Sainsbury’s wowing audiences.

Now the one we’ve all been waiting for has arrived as John Lewis releases its Excitable Edgar advert, following the story of someone who goes the extra mile for their best friend.

While fans have been sharing their love for the adorable, accident-prone dragon, many are suggesting Ikea’s Christmas advert could be better.

John Lewis’ Christmas advert 2019

The story of an nervy young dragon who almost derails festivities, Excitable Edgar shows how one person going the extra mile can change everything.

Set to a version of REO Speedwagon’s ‘Can’t Fight This Feeling’ by Bastille’s Dan Smith, the advert follows Edgar as he accidentally melts the village ice rink, reduces a snowman to a puddle and setting fire to a Christmas tree.

Edgar finally shuts himself away in despair, but Ava encourages him to rejoin the village with the gift of a Christmas pudding, which allows him to put his fire to perfect use.

Ikea’s Christmas advert 2019

Ikea has come in strong with its first ever Christmas advert, Silence the Critics, with its very own original - and catchy - grime track.

The advert starts with a family at home, feeling - like many of us do - some shame about the state of their house and the thought of impending guests.

Suddenly, an array of household ornaments, including the tea pot, a lamp and even the salt and pepper shakers, start taunting them about their untidy home.

The music, which comes out of the mouths of the taunting objects, is from MC D Double E.

Deciding to take action and address their house, the family spruce up their home with some simple Ikea solutions, such as a dining table, a rug, curtains and carefully placed picture frames to hide a crack in the wall.

What do people think?

Since John Lewis' advert was released yesterday, fans have been sharing their love of Edgar, asking where they can pick up a cuddly toy or a book about his story.

One woman said: "I've watched this five times already this morning! Best ad of the year so far!", while another added: "OH MY GOD, I can’t, this is too much. HE IS THE BEST. Please tell me we can buy Edgar in store."

However, many are taking to Twitter to share a different opinion - that Ikea's advert is even better.

One person said: "John Lewis 0, Ikea 1 - the dragon is probably still going to burn everyone in that room, nothing was solved and there was no real narrative arc. IKEA on the other hand is an absolute banger."

Another added: "Sorry but the @IKEAUK advert is so much better than the John Lewis one. No contest", while another said: "The Ikea Christmas ad blows the John Lewis ad out of the water."

Someone just said: "Sorry, John Lewis. Ikea have nailed it this year."
