4-year-old boy dies after straying onto highway in the middle of the night

A 4-year-old boy in Indiana was killed Monday after being hit by a car while straying onto a highway in the middle of the night.

In his release, the Warwick County Sheriff's Office identified the boy as Braxton Freeze and said the fatal accident occurred shortly after 4 a.m. on State Route 66 and Lincoln Avenue. rice field.

The boy's mother was visiting her boyfriend, and the three were staying at a nearby company. With the two adults asleep, Freeze wandered outside where they were staying and ran into the middle of the road.

Despite the driver's efforts, Freeze was pronounced dead at the scene.

When her mother woke up the next morning, her son was nowhere to be seen, Sheriff Michael Her Wilder told his WFIE.

"Knowing your child is dead is a parent's worst nightmare," Chief of Staff Paul Kruse told the station.

"The child's family, the driver, and all the first responders on the scene who got the call this morning. It affects everyone touched by the incident," Kruse added.

Authorities said the driver had never seen a child in the road before the crash and once he did, he could do nothing but stop driving and administer CPR.

} The sheriff's office does not believe drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident.

The Warwick County Sheriff's Office, the Indiana State Police, the Warwick County Coroner's Office, and the Indiana Department of Child Services are all involved in the investigation, which is ongoing.
