IPHONE owners will soon be able to use the new "extreme" lockdown mode to prevent spying.
However,Applewarns that increased security will limit some functionality.
iPhonewill not function normally when lockdown mode is activated.
App, websites and features are "strictly restricted" for security, but some experiences are "totally unavailable".
Powerful new features are designed to keep out highly sophisticated hackers when there is reason to believe they are being targeted.
This is intended to thwart "private companies developing state-sponsored mercenary spyware."
Apple has specifically turned to Israel'scyber firm NSO Group. The infamous Pegasus spyware is allegedly used to snoop on politicians, journalists and activists.
Turning on lockdown mode blocks most message attachments other than images.
Something like link preview doesn't work either.
FaceTimeCalls from unknown users are also prohibited.
And you won't even be able to connect your iPhone to your computer or accessories.
Apple describes this mode as an "extreme" option that most people don't need.
However, if so, it will be available in future iOS updates.
iOS16is expected to land sometime in the fall.
"Apple manufactures the most secure mobile devices on the market. Lockdown mode is a breakthrough feature that protects users from the rarest and most advanced attacks. It reflects our efforts, "said Ivan Krstić, Head of Security Engineering and Architecture at Apple.
"The majority of users will never be the victims of targeted cyberattacks, but we will work tirelessly to protect a small number of users.
"This includes continuing the design of defenses, especially for these users, and a world that does a very important job in publishing mercenary companies that create these digital attacks. We support researchers and organizations inside. "
