Johnny Depp ‘wept after personal assistant told him he kicked Amber Heard during drink and drugs bender’

JOHNNY Depp wept when told he had kicked wife Amber Heard during a massive drink and drugs bender, the High Court heard yesterday.

Depp’s personal assistant said he told him he had attacked Ms Heard on a private jet the previous day.

The actor was said to have yelled obscenities before slapping her face and kicking her in the back.

His assistant, Stephen Deuters, texted Ms Heard the day after the May 2014 incident to apologise.

He wrote: “He was appalled. When I told him he kicked you, he cried. It was disgusting, and he knows it. He doesn’t remember much, but we took him through all that happened. He’s sorry, very sorry, and just wants to get better.

“He’s teary. He doesn’t want to be a f-up anymore — his words.

“He’s got bad indigestion this morning but otherwise all right. He’s gone back to sleep for a bit. He’s incredibly apologetic and knows he has done wrong. He wants to get better now. He’s been very explicit about that this morning.”

Ms Heard then told Mr Deuters that she did not know if she could stay with Depp and “needed time”.

She wrote: “Obviously he has no idea what he did or to the extent that he did it. If someone was truly honest with him about how bad it really was, he’d be appalled. The man Johnny is would be humiliated.

“I’m sad that he doesn’t have a better way to really know the severity of his actions yesterday. Unfortunately for me, I remember in full detail everything that happened.”

Mr Deuters replied: “I know. It’s hideous. But that is one side of the man that you fell in love with.”

The pair had been flying from Boston to Los Angeles when Depp flew into a rage, the court heard.

Depp, 57, was said to have believed Ms Heard was having an affair with James Franco, her co-star in True Deception.

Last week he admitted it was “very likely” he had consumed ecstasy, alcohol, cocaine, marijuana and prescription painkillers before boarding the plane.

Depp is suing The Sun for calling him a “wife beater” in a 2018 article.

He denies being violent, saying Ms Heard, 34, abused him.

He was backed by Mr Deuters, a Brit who now runs Depp’s production company Infinitum Nihil.

He said yesterday he was “extremely surprised and outraged” when he found out she was accusing him of beating her.

He said: “I knew that Ms Heard was the abuser in the relationship and I was appalled that she would behave in this way.”

He also claimed the texts he sent after the plane row were not an admission of abuse.

He said Depp had told him to “type whatever you need to type” in order to “placate her, deflate the situation, create peace and get her on side”.

Sasha Wass QC, for The Sun, told him: “I suggest this series of texts is a clear admission by you to Ms Heard that Mr Depp had kicked Ms Heard and that he did not remember doing so.

“This cocktail of drugs and alcohol turned Mr Depp into a monster and he behaved appallingly to Ms Heard, and he would forget what he’d done.”

The court heard Depp would ask Mr Deuters to get him drugs. Ms Wass said Depp asked him to get some “mushrooms” before heading to the Bahamas for a detox.

Ms Wass said: “Can you confirm they’re not talking about porcini mushrooms?”

Mr Deuters laughed as he replied: “I don’t know anything about it.”

Ms Wass said: “Mr Depp would disagree with you because he says ‘Do you know if we can have Stephen contact someone to get some mushrooms?’ Did you arrange to procure some hallucinogenic mushrooms?”

The PA said: “I would have probably ignored the text.”

Depp also called Ms Heard a “c” for questioning his drinking. Depp texted Mr Deuters in August 2014: “She has accused me of boozing. I told her no. She is a c.”

On another occasion, Depp allegedly grabbed Ms Heard by the hair and chucked a magnum of champagne at her.

He is said to have got angry after Ms Heard complained about him being late to her 30th birthday bash.

Depp allegedly hurled the bottle, grabbed her hair and threw her on their bed, before leaving a note saying “Happy fing birthday” in April 2016.

He claimed he had just discovered he lost £515million in an “unpleasant” business meeting.

Depp said: “I was in the early stage of learning from my recently acquired new business manager that the former business managers had (taken) quite a lot of my money. They had stolen my money.”

Ms Wass said: “You were very near a magnum bottle of champagne. You picked up the bottle and threw it at her but it missed and glass smashed. That’s how you express yourself when you’re angry — you smash things.

“You grabbed her by the hair and pushed her on the bed. You blocked the door when she tried to leave and grabbed her hair and pushed her to the ground.”

But Depp claimed Ms Heard attacked him.

A concierge at the LA building where Depp and Ms Heard had a penthouse also cast doubt on another abuse allegation yesterday.

Trinity Esparza said she saw “no injuries whatsoever” on Ms Heard’s face in the days after Depp allegedly inflicted a black eye on her in May 2016. She said: “Her demeanour was normal and there appeared to be nothing out of the ordinary.”

The first injury she noticed was six days after the alleged assault and the day she applied for a restraining order, the court heard.

She noticed “a red mark underneath her right eye”, adding: “I thought that was very peculiar because Mr Depp had left [a week earlier]. After seeing the news reports of Ms Heard’s battered face and domestic abuse allegations, I was disturbed.”

Depp says Ms Heard’s claims are a “hoax”. His lawyer, David Sherborne, referred to a message Ms Heard’s dad had sent the actor after an alleged assault.

Part of it read: “I still love you like a brother or father or whatever.”
Mr Sherborne said: “If your daughter Lily-Rose told you her husband had slapped her, repeatedly punched her, smashed her nose, dragged her up the stairs by her hair and pulled out clumps of her hair, would you still send him a text saying ‘I love you like a father’?”

Depp replied: “Definitely not.”

He finished answering questions after nearly 23 hours of evidence. As he stepped from the box he joked: “I’m going to miss it.”
