Knife rampage at school sees several hospitalised as emergency services swarm area

Several people have been injured during a knife rampage at a school in Sweden, according to local police.

At least three people have been rushed to hospital following the alleged attack in the Munktellarenan in Eskilstuna, a little over 100km west of the capital of Stockholm.

Police spokesman Dennis Strömberg Johansson told local outlet TV4 Nyheterna: "It is true that a serious crime is taking place in Eskilstuna, but in any case there is no shooting."

It is understood the attack took place during an "outdoor day" when two gangs became embroiled in a vicious fight at a sports facility, reports the outlet.

"The students have been on an outdoor day here at the arena," said Mattias Albers, area manager for Arenas and outdoor activities in the town.

Multiple school students were injured in the attack, with police confirming two of the three hospitalised victims had suffered stab wounds to the upper body.

It is unclear how severe their injuries are.

Police patrols and ambulances were called to the scene just before 1pm local time today (Thursday, June 1).

Witnesses told SVT Nyheter Sörmland they saw at least five police cars and two ambulances at the school following the incident.

The arena has now been cordoned off and Albers reported the incident had calmed down by 2pm local time.

"The police secure traces at the scene," he said.

The school's head teacher commented: "We know very little at the moment," but refused to comment further other than to confirm the alleged stabbings did not take place on the school's main grounds as initially thought.

There have been no arrests yet but police are now investigating an attempted murder.
