Lanarkshire mum kept in dark over sexual risk order against man she was seeing

A Lanarkshire mum was kept in the dark about a sexual risk order made against a man she was seeing.

The court ruling meant that 32-year-old Ricky Sampson was banned from contact with any girl aged under 16 without adult approval and supervision.

But he struck up a relationship with the woman and her children without telling her about his status.

Sampson, of Gateside Road, Craigneuk, appeared from custody at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

He admitted breaching an 'at risk of sexual harm order' imposed at a crown court in London in June 2015.

Rebecca Clark, prosecuting, stressed that Sampson hadn't at that time been convicted of a crime and the order was imposed "somewhat unusually" as a result of a civil court hearing.

She told Sheriff John Hamilton that he has no previous criminal convictions.

The court heard that he and the Wishaw woman involved in the current case had known each other previously, but there had been no contact between them for 10 years until January 2021.

Sampson moved from London at that point and set up home in Craigneuk.

The charge stated that between July and October 2021 he failed to tell the woman of his status while having contact with her daughter.

Ms Clark told the court: "He did not disclose to the woman that he was the subject of a court order.

"The woman went to his home at least once a week, sometimes with her children who were aged eight and 11.

"The accused visited her home at least twice a week and sometimes they would go to the park with the children, albeit at no point was he alone with the 11-year-old girl."

Ms Clark said the offence came to light during a routine police visit to Sampson's home.

Police officers interviewed the woman who said she was unaware of the court order that he was subject to.

The fiscal added: "He told officers that he had been waiting for the right time to tell her."

Sampson was placed on bail after an initial court appearance in October 2021, but has been in prison since failing to attend court in March this year.

Sheriff Hamilton deferred sentence until July for background reports and a risk assessment. Sampson was again remanded in custody.
