There is a heavy police presence on Deansgate due to an ongoing incident.

The busy city centre road had been taped off between Whitworth Street West and Liverpool Road earlier this morning (September 24).

The road has since reopened but it is understood police are still at the scene.

The nature of the incident has not yet been confirmed.

Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for more information.

The cordon is near to Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink station and the Hilton Hotel.

In an earlier tweet, TfGM said: "A56 Deansgate is closed between its junctions with Whitworth St W & Liverpool Rd due to a Police Incident.

"Go North West Free bus services may be on diversion, please check before travel.

"Please seek an alternative route."

In an update at around 8am, they said the road had reopened.

Eye witness report seeing police and paramedics

An eye witness has told the M.E.N he saw a number of police vehicles on Deansgate this morning.

He described seeing the road taped off and an ambulance parked at the scene.

The nature of the incident has not yet been confirmed.
