    Patience is a virtue…

Oisin Murphy had to wait, wait and then wait a bit more before delivering Shailene to win Newbury's third.

Mighty Murph is on fire at the moment and said: “I'm really pleased for the filly. She's been well placed and deserved that.

“She should stay further but needs to relax to do so.”

Jim Crowley wasn't exactly bouncing back to the weighing room after being nailed late on the jolly Soto Sizzler and reckoned: “It didn't hurt making the running on him – he's a bit one-paced.

“I'd say he'll definitely stay further than that.”

Meanwhile, hats off to Frankie Dettori.

Racing's walking billboard is running round like a headless chicken but took time out to pose for numerous photos for a local charity when one of the fundraisers asked for his help. Top man Frankie!

    And in pops a jolly…….

A rag nicked the first at Newbury but order was restored when the favourite Smokey Bear knuckled down to win the second under super strong Jason Watson.

“He's a nice horse but I think he might struggle in handicaps. I'd say the best route for him would be a little novice race.

    “He's got plenty of speed – a drop to 5f wouldn't hurt.”

Meanwhile, don't bin Brian Meehan's Abnaa. A gang of punters connected to Jim `Best Mate' Culloty were told to get on this fella and he showed plenty of `early' before running out of gas.

You could have heard a pin drop when 33-1 shot Theotherside flew home under patient Pat Dobbs to run away with opener at Newbury.

The filly looked weaker than a Junior Disprin in the paddock, so this was either a ropey old contest or she's got a lot more ability than her physique suggests.

There was plenty of money for Roger Varian's jolly King Ragnar and he was the eye-catcher pinging home for second. He'll be well-bet and hard to stop next time.

Tom Marquand cut no ice on Doctor Nuno but was well pleased with the ground, saying:

“They're kicking the top off but it's a perfect racing surface – really lovely.”

Meanwhile, the KGB go to Richard Hughes' yard for lessons on how to stay schtoom but a stable insider did drop a hint that Harry Dunlop's Golden Lips was primed and ready to win over an extended 7f at Lingfield last weekend.

The filly duly did the business in style and connections are adamant she'll improve again over further. Stick her in your notebook.

The Haynes, Hanson &Clark Stakes has been won by a right galaxy of stars over the years so keep 'em peeled when the runners line-up today.
