Keen swimmers eager to try out the revamped The City Baths in Newcastle have now only a few days to wait.

The restored city landmark has announced that it will open on Monday, January 27 which will offer the first opportunity to take a dip in the pool and see the results of its £7.5m makeover.

Local residents had been promised a January opening but the date is later than initially intended, due to the painstaking restoration uncovering the need for extra work along the way.

The sauna in the swimming area

Revealing the launch date on Wednesday, the venue said: "The final touches and installs are taking place as we speak: we are on the home stretch."

The City Baths, dating from 1928 and a much loved institution in Newcastle, is making a comeback after almost 10 years with a whole new range of facilities including a state-of-the-art gym, group exercise studios and a sauna.

These, as well as the swimming pool, will be open on Monday from 6.30am until 9.30pm. Up to then, there is a last chance for interested groups to claim a Founder Member deal offering a 10% saving on membership.

Founder member benefits include a voucher pack worth £125 and invitations to club events. And there's an annual membership option which includes two months for free if taken out before the opening day.

The voucher pack includes an introductory personal training session; two guest passes for family and friends; a health consultation and measurement session and a guest pass for the Turkish Baths.

Complications during the revamp were connected with the downstairs Turkish Baths where heating generators had to be replaced and this area is set to open in a second phase.

From Monday, The City Baths will continue to open from 6.30am to 9.30pm on weekdays and then from 8am until 5.30pm at weekends.
