Earlier this month the campaign to protect air quality across Rainham and South Hornchurch moved to the next stage. The planning inspectorate have made their recommendations to the Secretary of State on whether to approve or reject a second mass waste incinerator on the banks of the Thames - which would threaten air quality, human health and biodiversity across the south of Havering.

All eyes are on the climate and environmental emergency at present and I can't see any argument to allow this development. Even at this late stage the applicant cannot demonstrate that there is any need for a second incinerator.

Meanwhile, every report has stated how damaging this will be for the south of the constituency due to the prevailing wind direction.

You may also want to watch:

Statistics released back in 2018 outlined that if these plans go ahead it will result in the highest concentration of harmful emissions anywhere in the country.

I don't want future generations across the south of the constituency suffering poor air and health because we didn't act today. In the coming weeks I will be handing in a petition of over 2000 signatures to the Secretary of State - and I will be raising this issue in parliament whilst we await the decision.

The last five years have shown us that we can't trust the Tories on air quality. Under their government waste incineration has doubled and recycling rates have stagnated as a result. The future of air quality across the south of Dagenham and Rainham now sits on a Tory minister's desk.

There's still time to add your name. If you haven't signed the petition against this mass waste incinerator you can do so here: joncruddas.org.uk/belvedere-incinerator-petition
