Pep Guardiola claimed Bernardo Silva is the best player in the Premier League after his wonder goal fired Manchester City to victory.

City midfielder Silva netted a brilliant volley after a lightning counter attack as the reigning champions inflicted a first defeat on new Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard.

When quizzed whether Silva was among the best players in the Premier League on form, City boss Guardiola said: "The best. When we made 98 points two or three years ago, he was the best, too. Take the videos and you will see.

"It was an incredible finish. The goal was good, it was quick. To beat them was an incredible step for us.

"The performance, 90 minutes, it was exceptional, the way we start the game. Villa have everything and the way we behaved today was really really good. Villa are a top side with an incredible players and the manager on the touchline.

Guardiola chalked up a landmark of 150 wins, praised Jack Grealish on his return to Aston Villa and also the performance of Raheem Sterling as they kept the pressure on Chelsea with Liverpool just behind.

"Quite proud, we won some games, it is not bad. It is good news. 150 victories is a lot in the Premier League and we did it in a short time. Big compliment for the whole club and more to come.

"Jack gave us what we needed. He was perfect. Playing his touches and every time he took the ball he didn’t lose the ball.

"Today I would like to praise one player in particular Raheem Sterling he played the best game since a long time ago. He deserve all my compliments because he was sensational.

"If you see the machine scoring goals Liverpool and the consistency from Chelsea so the important is being there. It is important the way we are performing on a high, high level."

Villa boss Gerrard was full of praise for his team's display as they fought back 2-0 down and City were hanging on at the end and could have easily snatched a draw.

Gerrard said: "The second half I thought we were outstanding. We scared City at times, we were so close to taking something.

"Terrific reaction and I have told the players not to leave this stadium with their heads down.

"When you take over a job like this on the back of someone who is an Aston Villa supporter who took them up from the Championship to the Premier League who is one of their own it was always going to be a tough transition.

"It is on me to prove to these supporters that I am the right man and that I can put a team out there that can compete.

"In terms of the fans’ support, I can’t ask for any more. I can’t be any more positive in terms of what I have seen in the last two weeks."
