A GERMAN prosecutor leading the probe into Madeleine McCann suspect Christian B revealed today he had no idea Portuguese police were searching wells.
Hans Christian Wolters said the hunts at three sites close to Praia da Luz were not sparked by a tip-off from his team.
And his officers have no idea what led them to the scene.
It emerged last night that up to 20 more wells may be checked.
Portuguese police have still not commented on the searches, which produced no evidence.
But the move heightened concerns that investigators might miss the chance to nail Christian B for abducting the three-year-old in 2007.
The convicted child sex fiend, rapist, thief and drug dealer could walk free if he wins an appeal this week - unless cops unearth new evidence linking him to Madeleine.
Mr Wolters said of the well searches today: "I read about it, but the measures were not taken in consultation with the BKA (Germany’s equivalent of the FBI) or us.
"The Portuguese police are investigating themselves. We don't know what knowledge they are based on.

"We are in contact with the Portuguese and British colleagues, are in exchange, but we do not talk to each other all the time."
Wolters has begged for better cooperation after war broke out between his team and the Portuguese last month when 43-year-old Christian B was named the prime suspect.
Christian B is suspected of taking three-year-old Madeleine from her bed while her parents ate tapas with pals 50 yards away in May 2007.
