Rio Ferdinand says Manchester United's mentality against Fulham shows the club have what it takes to challenge for the Premier League title.

United came from behind to beat Fulham 2-1 thanks to goals from Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba to return to the top of the Premier League.

The Reds were briefly displaced by Leicester City on Tuesday night with their impressive victory over Chelsea before Manchester City went level on points with the Foxes thanks to two late goals against Aston Villa minutes before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side kicked off at Craven Cottage.

Yet, after Ademola Lookman had put Fulham ahead, the Reds were able to come from behind to retake top spot.

Pogba's goal-scoring performance continued the Frenchman's fine form in recent weeks as he has taken the Reds' reliance off of Bruno Fernandes.

Speaking on BT Sport, Ferdinand argued that the mentality of United's players means the side's other star players will be looking to try and replicate the sort of form that is now winning Pogba praise.

He said: "Given the change in the teams at the top, Leicester and then Man City just before this game, in terms of the character and the mindset, this tells me that this Man United are here to stay, they’re here to fight for this league. They’re here to try and win this Premier League.

"Whether you’re going to try and win the league or trying to get out the relegation zone, the key word is always momentum. Manchester United have that in abundance at the moment.

"They’re in a rich vein of form, players are gaining more confidence week in, week out.

"Before it was Bruno, Bruno, Bruno. They were over reliant on Bruno but Pogba’s stepped up this month, he’s become the man in the spotlight, and Rashford’s going to be sitting there thinking ‘when is my turn?’.

"Cavani is going to be doing the same thing and that’s what you want."
