Russian spy planes flew into Alaskan defense zone twice in past two days, NORAD says

Russian reconnaissance planes penetrated Alaska's Air Defense Identification Zone twice in the past two days and operated by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said.

In a statement, NORAD confirmed that Russian aircraft were confined to the zone in question and "did not enter the sovereign airspace of the United States or Canada."

Still, Russia's decision to fly aircraft into the Defense Identification Zone may be noteworthy.

This is the first time a Russian aircraft has breached the identification zone since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February and heightened tensions with the United States. NORAD also reported that last October he flew five Russian aircraft into the zone.

The Defense Identification Zone is not considered a sovereign territory of the United States, so the Russian aircraft allegedly entering the zone did not violate international law.
