South Lanarkshire councillors approved plans to implement new policies that will challenge the stigma around menstruation.
At the full council meeting today (September 28), a motion proposed by councillor Julia Marrs and seconded by councillor Mary Donnelly was welcomed by elected members.
It calls for the council to recognise and challenge the stigma surrounding menstruation and to implement new policies to help those who suffer.

Councillor Marrs called for the council to ask the executive directors of finance and corporate resources and education resources to consider the necessity, feasibility and implications of implementing a menstruation policy for schools and the workforce.
The motion also calls for schools and workplaces to launch training for all line managers and teachers and to offer guidance for all pupils and employees who experience a period.
As well as this, the motion includes a provision for the right to up to three days paid leave per month for employees who suffer.
Councillors welcomed the plans, which will be subject to review by finance and corporate resources and education resources with another report on the feasibility of the new policy being brought back to full council at the next meeting.
Council leader, Joe Fagan, said: “I think the motion is very well worded and I appreciate it being brought forward, it aligns with the administration’s ambitions to be a fair and inclusive employer.”
