Strictly's Shirley Ballas takes savage swipe at Matt Goss after he dodges first elimination

Strictly Come Dancing's head judge Shirley Ballas took a savage swipe at contestant Matt Goss, after he narrowly avoided being eliminated last weekend.

The 20th series of Strictly is once again being hosted by Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, with Shirley, Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and Anton Du Beke returning as judges.

During an appearance on The One Show, the 62-year-old head judge was asked about Matt going head-to-head in the dreaded dance-off with Loose Women star Kaye Adams on Sunday night.

After both couples had danced a second time, the judges delivered their verdicts and Matt, who found fame in 80s pop group Bros, was saved by three of the members of the judging panel.

With three votes in favour of Matt, it meant they had won the majority vote and would be leaving the competition regardless, however head judge Shirley said she would have decided to save Kaye and Kai.

“I was absolutely mortified that she left, to be quite honest.”

Speaking on the BBC's The One Show, the ballroom legend explained: “I just felt on the evening both couples made mistakes, but the quality of Kaye was far superior.

“I was absolutely mortified that she left, to be quite honest.”

Shirley added: “I love my fellow judges and we're all there to do a job but, in my opinion, that was one they didn't quite get right.”

When asked by host Tess about their time on the show following the first elimination, Kaye said: “It was the right result and I did make mistakes, and when it comes to that high pressured situation that’s what happens, so I am delighted for Matt and Nadiya.”

Turning to partner Kai, she continued: “The only person I am just sorry for is this wonderful man, who has just been so brilliant.

“It was a hell of a lot of fun, I said my ambition was to learn to love to dance and actually I have seen a whole new side to myself, it’s opened a little door.

“It’s been a wonderful experience and to spend time with such talented people who love the show so much has been a joy!”

Sunday’s Results show also featured a routine from the professional dancers to a medley of Need You Tonight by INXS and About Damn Time by Lizzo as well as a performance from singer songwriter Robbie Williams.
