Two children and two adults died after "drunk driving" crashed into a golf cart

Two adults and two children in a golf cart died on Saturday. Police said the man, believed to be intoxicated, collided past a stop sign.

Miguel Espinoza, 45, of Rosenberg, Texas, was injured in a crash around 11:30 p.m. Saturday in Galveston, about 80 miles (80 km) southeast of Houston. was charged with manslaughter by drunk driving.

Galveston Police Sergeant Derek Gaspard said his SUV, his Espinoza, while driving, crashed into his truck after failing to stop at a stop sign. The pickup then smashed into a golf cart carrying six people from the same family.

Golf's cart and pickup truck were driving in opposite directions at a street intersection with no stop sign.

The adult driver of the golf cart was pronounced dead at the scene, and the woman and her two children were taken to hospital where they died. Two other passengers, an adult and a child, were hospitalized and were in critical condition as of Sunday, police said.

Espinoza and a passenger suffered minor injuries, but they were picked up from his truck. No crew members were injured. The name and age of the deceased have not been released.

According to ABC 13, the family members involved in the crash were her grandparents and their nieces, and her three grandchildren.

A grandfather, niece and two grandchildren were reportedly killed in the accident. Her grandmother and one of her grandchildren are still in the hospital, seriously injured.

Galveston Mayor Craig Brown said golf carts have become "a huge amount of transportation" for residents and tourists in the area near the Gulf of Mexico.

Additional safety measures for operating golf carts will be considered by an upcoming city council, Brown said.

Espinoza was held on Sunday at the Galveston County Jail on $400,000 bail.
