UEFA react to Liverpool fan chaos as 'fake tickets' blamed for Champions League Final disarray

UEFA have blamed the Champions League Final chaos on "fake tickets".

Scores of Liverpool fans were left locked out of the Stade de France for their side's defeat to Real Madrid amid organisational chaos at European football's showpiece event.

It's been reported some supporters were even tear gassed by police as they attempted to gain entry to the final, which was delayed for over 30 minutes.

And pictures showed large numbers still outside the ground as the match approached half-time.

UEFA have promised to review the incident as they say the turnstiles became blocked due to knock-off tickets which were not working at the gates.

The governing body has faced fierce criticism over the ugly scenes and for initially claiming the delay was due to fans arriving late.

The statement said: "In the lead-up to the game, the turnstiles at the Liverpool end became blocked by thousands fans who had purchased fake tickets which did not work in the turnstiles.

"This created a build-up of fans trying to get in. As a result, the kick off was delayed by 35 minutes to allow as many fans as possible with genuine tickets to gain access.

"As numbers outside the stadium continued to build up after kick off, the police dispersed them with tear gas and forced them away from the stadium.

"UEFA is sympathetic to those affected by these events and will further review these matters urgently together with the French police and authorities, and with the French Football Federation."
