Jeremy Paxman resigned after 28 years with the University Challenge, ending his position as the longest-serving quiz master on British television.
His 72-year-old, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's last year, has been running the show since 1994 when he was revived by the BBC.
He will film his final episode this fall and his final series will air on BBC Two and his BBC iPlayer from 29 August to next summer.
"He has hosted this incredible series for nearly 29 years," he said on Tuesday. "I've been lucky enough to work with a great team and meet some of the brightest minds in the country. It gives me hope for the future."
A replacement has already been identified and will be announced later this week.
University Challenge is the UK's longest running game show in his 60 years.
Her Kate Phillips, director of her Unscripted for the BBC, said: of the best and most formidable quiz masters in the world.
"I am so grateful to Jeremy for his incredible 28 years of dedication to the show. All of us and the show's millions of viewers will miss him."
In 2021, Paxman revealed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease,and said his symptoms were "currently mild" and he was "under excellent treatment."
