Villagers endure 'never ending cycle of torture' due to mystery humming noise

Residents of a quaint British village say they are living in misery due to a mystery humming noise.

Not everyone in Holmfield can hear the noise - while others have to live with it rumbling in their homes.

Investigators have been unable to find what is causing the sound which has become known as the Holmfield Hum.

Yvonne Conner is one of those who can hear the noise and said it is like a "never-ending cycle of torture" living at the village near Halifax, West Yorkshire.

She has had to "escape" some weekends to avoid the constant droning which has been at her Victorian terrace for three years.

"I love my home but some days I absolutely detest being in it. It feels like there's no happy space here any more," she told the BBC.

Yvonne compared the noise to the whirring of a washing machine or an idling diesel engine.

Its impact has had a severe impact on her life, affecting her health and her job.

As well as hearing the noise, Yvonne said she can feel it on her eardrums "like a pressure" all the time.

Low frequency sounds like the hum can't be masked or blocked out by ear plugs and headphones.

The noise, which ranges from around 10Hz to 200Hz, gets louder on nights when the streets in the village are silent.

Yvonne has even been woke up in the early hours of the morning by the sound which she could hear through her pillow.

Zoe Millar has also suffered years of disrupted sleep due to the noise.

"It leaves you feeling worn out because it's worse on a night so trying to sleep is hard," she said.

"We have considered moving but why should we when it's something that's not our fault?"

A petition was signed in 2020 prompting an investigation by Calderdale Council.

The village is located at the bottom of a valley with homes dotted around industrial and commercial premises.

Some residents believe local industrial units are to blame for the noise, but the source remains unknown.

The council initially said it had pinpointed three possible causes but never specified what they were.

At the end of the investigation, officers said they were unable to find the problem.

Low frequency humming is not unique to Holmfield, with similar noises being heard elsewhere in the country, including in Bournemouth.
