Wesley Fofana spotted on crutches as Chelsea boss Graham Potter issues worrying update

Wesley Fofana left Stamford Bridge on crutches on Wednesday night, much to the concern of Chelsea boss Graham Potter.

The young centre-back endured mixed fortunes as the Blues dismissed Italian giants AC Milan 3-0 in the Champions League. He was on hand to open the scoring in the first-half as he prodded home his first goal for the Blues since his big-money switch from Leicester City.

However, the evening soon turned sour as an awkward landing saw him pick up what appeared to be a knee injury. Fofana attempted to play on after receiving treatment but was soon withdrawn to be replaced by Trevoh Chalobah.

He was then spotted leaving Stamford Bridge after the game on a pair of crutches, wearing a knee brace.. Following the final whistle, Blues boss Potter suggested that he does not yet know the severity of the injury but is worried.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, he said: “We don’t know the extent yet, that’s the one disappointing thing about the evening.

“We need to scan and fingers crossed. I wouldn’t want to speculate on it now but we’re concerned and we just need to wait until tomorrow and get it scanned and hope for the best.

“These things happen. He’s a young guy, he’s a strong guy, we’ll help him and support him.”

A serious problem would be a huge blow for the 21-year-old after his promising start to life as a Chelsea player. Fofana missed a large period of last season with former club Leicester having suffered a broken leg in a pre-season showdown with Spanish side Villarreal.

He returned to make 12 appearances in all competitions throughout the campaign and was expected to remain at the King Power Stadium only for Chelsea to make a £70m for his signature late in the summer transfer window.

It remains to be seen if Fofana will be available for the weekend’s Premier League showdown with Wolverhampton Wanderers although it looks extremely unlikely. He is set to undergo tests to determine the full extent of his injury before then.

However, Potter could be bolstered by the return of N’Golo Kante. The midfielder has not appeared since mid-August having been struggling with a thigh injury. However, he has returned to training over the past week so could well be in contention for Potter sooner rather than later.
