A woman has died following a horror smash on the M56 in Cheshire.

The Manchester-bound carriageway was closed for almost 12 hours on Thursday night following the crash which happened between junction 10 and junction nine for the M6.

It is understood the collision involved a several vehicles and a HGV.

Traffic was brought to a standstill. Large metal screens were put up while emergency services attended.

Cheshire Police have now confirmed that a 56-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man, aged 62, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

Five others sustained minor injuries.

 

Officers are now appealing for anyone who witnesses the crash to get in touch.

Cheshire Police said in a statement: "At around 5.20pm on Thursday, September 19, emergency services responded to a serious road traffic collision on the M56 motorway on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 10 and 9.

"The incident involved several cars and a HGV. Sadly, a 56-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 62-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. A further five people sustained minor injuries.

"The carriageway was shut while emergency services worked at the scene. The road was fully re-opened shortly before 5am."
