Woman mocked for choosing 'embarrassing' name for her child that's like reality star

Choosing an unusual baby name is a bold move because you can almost guarantee not everybody will warm to it. At the end of the day though, that doesn't matter as long as you're happy with it, and your partner is too. Names are with your child for life, so it's important that you like it, and that it suits your baby as well.

One woman took to Mumsnet to express her concerns because her husband said he didn't like the name she'd chosen for their daughter - but he failed to come up with any suggestions of his own as alternatives.

She wrote: "I’m pregnant. My husband has said he 'can’t think' of any names for our daughter.

"I’ve thought of a few and really like ‘Ocean’ but my husband is saying it’s an 'embarrassing' name but he hasn’t suggested any names himself for our daughter."

Some Mumsnetters backed the dad and said they weren't keen on the name, with some members making it no secret that they didn't like it at all.

One wrote: "Try to imagine introducing yourself as an adult as Ocean. It’s cruel to a child and ridiculous and embarrassing for an adult!"

"Unless you are one of the Kardashians, don't", one jibed.

Another agreed, commenting: "Unless you are a Kardashian probably not. It's nice in a way, but too out there I think."

Others backed the woman saying the name was nice and unique. Some even pointed out if you like a name, that's all that matters.

Someone said: "You’re not unreasonable to choose a name you like for your child. That’s what most people do."

Another wrote: "There are lots of ‘Océans’ in France. If your husband hates it you need to keep thinking though. Have you seen those websites/apps where you both separately tick all the names you like on a big list and then the app shows you which ones you both chose?"

One Mumsnetter wrote: "There was a boy in my son's class called Ocean. Considering how words like Bear, Willow, and Magnolia have become names, I don't think it's that weird."

"If your husband has no suggestions then he doesn't get a say. Easy", one fumed.
