Woman rushed to hospital after three-car smash on Scots road as man charged

A woman has been rushed to hospital after a three-vehicle pile-up in Ayrshire. Emergency services raced to the scene on the A78, near Kilwinning, around 5.30pm.

The multi-motor smash brought the busy road to a standstill, with police, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) and paramedics in attendance.

One woman was taken to hospital and a man has since been charged in connection with the incident, cops confirmed this evening. Reports of heavy tailbacks of traffic in and around the accident site were reported on social media.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "At around 4.40pm on Thursday, December 8, 2022, we were called to a report of a three-car crash on the A78 near Pennyburn Roundabout.

"One woman was taken to Crosshouse Hospital to be checked over. Recovery was arranged for all three vehicles and the road reopened at around 6.45pm. A man has been charged in connection with the incident and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal."

A spokesman for the SFRS said: "We received a call around 4.48pm to attend a three-vehicle accident on the A78.

"Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service were both in attendance. We sent four appliances, but it was established after arrival that no assistance was needed from the fire service."
