Rocky Dawuni, a Grammy-nominated reggae singer, has intervened in Kirani Ayat’s protracted copyright dispute with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).
The well-known Ghanaian reggae artist claims that most artists in Ghana rely mostly on their investments to advance their careers. He thinks that most artists give up on their professions in the process as a result of this phenomena.
“The majority of Ghanaian artists have nothing other than their own investments in the arts.” In an interview with Doreen Avio on Day Break Hitz, Rocky Dawuni said, “In a lot of them, even along the way, will end their careers because they cannot sustain it.”
Rocky Dawuni added that with the right legal framework for intellectual property rights, an artiste will receive returns on their investments. If we have rules and improve them, at least some locations where their works are used might allow them to receive compensation for their efforts, he said.
He added that because his (Ayat’s) intellectual property rights were violated, the rapper of “Sarki” had the right to object. President Nana Akufo-Addo posted a video on Twitter that included footage from the rapper’s music video for “GUDA” without the artist’s consent, prompting Kirani Ayat to criticise GTA.
