Find out more about Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi and who he is

KING Mangosuthu Buthelezi passed away in the early hours of Saturday at his home in Kwa Phindangene, Lundi, at the age of 95. Shenge was just passing by and had just been released from the hospital where he was being treated.

Shenge was born on August 27, 1928 in Mahlabathi, Lundi, KwaZulu-Natal. His parents were King Mathole Buthelezi and Prince Magogo of Dinuzulu, who belonged to Zulu’s clan.

Shenge started studying at Mpumalanga Primary in Mahhashini, KwaNongoma from 1933 to 1943. He went on to Adams College in Manzimtoti from 1944 to 1947. He studied at the University of Fort Hare from 1948 to 1950.

In 1953, King Buthelezi took the throne left by his father. Shenge has been a consultant to the writers of the historical film about the Battle of Sandlwana and played the role of Silo Cetshwayo by Mpande in it.

The job of being the Prime Minister of Zulu is old for Shenge. He comes from his ancestors as Mnyamana ka Ngqengelele Buthelezi was the Prime Minister of King Cetshwayo ka Mpande coordinating with his forces.

King Mathole, who gave birth to Shenge, was the Prime Minister of King Solomon of Dinuzulu. In 1954 Solomon’s King Bhekuzulu appointed Shenge as Prime Minister of Zulu. When the King Zwelithini of Bhekuzulu came in, Shenge continued his work.

King Buthelezi was married to Royal Irene MaMzila Buthelezi, who has passed away. Shenge was the Minister of Home Affairs between 1994 and 2004.

He is probably the oldest Member of Parliament. He used to act as the President of the country when Dr. Nelson Madela was not there.

Buthelezi led the government of KwaZulu from 1975 until 1994 when democracy came into the country. Shenge was considered as a strong leader and he was also present at the Codesa talks where the South African revolution was discussed.

Shenge led the IFP from its inception until 2019 when a new leader, Mr. Velenkosini Hlabisa, was elected at a conference held in Olundi.

When he laid down the reins of leadership of the IFP, it was decided that he should be named honorary president.

The IFP said it was doing this with the intention of honoring him for his role in the party he fell and rose with. He became very close to Silo who bowed down to Zwelithini of Bhekuzulu and he also got close to Silo Misuzulu of Zwelithini.
