Donegal man in two-night running challenge for autism class

A young Carndonagh man is in the midst of a gruelling running challenge to raise funds for local schoolchildren with autism.

Matthew Cavanagh’s 4/4/48 challenge involves running four miles (6.4km), every four hours for 48 hours. He hit the road on Tuesday and crossed the halfway mark today.

With just over three hours of a break between runs, it’s a mental challenge as much as a physical one.

Matthew’s fundraiser was inspired by his godson Caolan. Caolan is a pupil of Ms. Hegarty’s ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) class in Scoil Iosagain, Buncrana. The high level of support provided by the course led Matthew to plan a challenge to give something back.

“The services and activities that the program provides are a massive help to both the children and their parents,” said Matthew.

“On a personal level this is also a great challenge that I’d love to test myself against, and it’d be fantastic to raise some money for a good cause while I’m at it.”

Matthew has seven out of 13 runs complete and will finish at 12noon tomorrow (Thursday).

“It’s been tough but enjoyable so far and all the help and messages I’ve received have been thoroughly appreciated!” he said.

“I am over the moon with the donations so far and I want to thank local business for their support and for allowing me to put sponsorship forms up on their premises: Paul Mc Gowan Fitness and Health, Rosato’s Bar & Restaurant, Olivia’s Coffee Shop, Simpson’s Bar & Restaurant.

“As well as those, thank you to the Muff Liquor for sharing the fundraiser throughout social media.”
