Baby said born under rubble in Syria, is rescued while mother dies

A baby who was born under the rubble of a building that collapsed in the recent earthquakes in Syria was pulled to safety Tuesday, according to local media reports. The child’s parents were both killed in the disaster.

Reports said the mother had apparently gone into labor after the first major earthquake hit on Monday and managed to give birth before she died. Most reports identified the baby as a boy.

Dramatic footage shared on social media showed the moment when the baby, covered in dust, was lifted from the wreckage of the building and rushed to safety by emergency workers.

There were conflicting reports on exactly where the incident happened but most located the event in northeast Syria.

Over 5,000 people have been confirmed dead in the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday morning.
