Daily Briefing Sep 26: Yom Kippur prayer leads to violence in TA; 1973 war remembered

Welcome to The Times of Israel’s Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what’s happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday.

Diplomatic correspondent Lazar Berman and religion reporter Canaan Lidor join host Amanda Borschel-Dan in today’s episode.

Berman, back in Israel after accompanying Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the United States, fills us in on the lesser-discussed meetings that occurred on the sidelines at the United Nations.

Foreign Minister Eli Cohen met with his Emirati counterpart Abdullah Bin Zayed on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly as well, marking three years to the Abraham Accords. What was said there?

A senior Saudi delegation is visiting the West Bank this week for a meeting with Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas. Was this meeting already scheduled or is it directly related to the seemingly sped-up Saudi-Israeli normalization process?

During the much-awaited meeting between US President Joe Biden and the prime minister, Biden said, “I think without Israel, there’s not a Jew in the world who’s secure. I think Israel is essential.” How was this received by the Diaspora?

All the headlines in Israeli media this morning relate to the Yom Kippur prayer service in Tel Aviv where, despite a city order backed up by the Supreme Court, worshipers set up a temporary mechitza. Lidor breaks it down for us.

Fifty years ago during the Yom Kippur fast, many Israelis in reserve duty were suddenly activated to go fight. Berman shares part of his experiences on a trip to the far north to mark the anniversary of the 1973 war.
