Is Gal Gadot done playing Wonder Woman?
The Israeli actress portrayed the superhero in 2017’s “Wonder Woman” and 2020’s “Wonder Woman 1984.” At the end of 2020, Warner Bros. announced that it would fast-track a third “Wonder Woman” film starring Gadot.
But on Wednesday, news broke that the studio was axing the third installment amid a shakeup in its approach to its DC Comics universe. The news was reported in both Variety and Deadline, two publications with close industry ties.
According to the reports, James Gunn and Peter Safran, who took control of Warner Bros.’ DC Studios a month ago, were not on board with the vision submitted by director Patty Jenkins, who was behind the camera for the first two films.
The news came just a day after Gadot posted a cryptic message on social media about the character’s future.

“On this day, a few years ago, was the first announcement that I was going to play Wonder Woman,” Gadot wrote on Tuesday. “I’ve been so grateful for the opportunity to play such an incredible, iconic character and more than anything I’m grateful for YOU. The fans. The most amazing, warm, loving fans in the world. I’m still pinching myself to see if I will wake up. Can’t wait to share her next chapter with you.”

Gadot’s future within the DC Comics film franchise remains uncertain. Deadline suggested that Jenkins “could very well hand in another take on the superhero” that would receive studio approval, while Variety reported that “there is still every chance” Gadot could “return to the DC fold in one way or another.”
Either way, audiences will be treated to another glimpse of Gadot as Wonder Woman when she reprises the role in a cameo in the upcoming film “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” slated for a March 2023 release.
Gadot, who helms her own production company, Pilot Wave, along with her husband, Jaron Varsano, also has plenty of other film projects on the horizon.
She has been cast as the Evil Queen in a live-action Disney adaptation of “Snow White” slated for 2024; will star in a remake of “To Catch a Thief,” playing the character made famous by Grace Kelly; and is working on producing and starring in a biopic about Egyptian queen Cleopatra.
“Heart of Stone,” a spy thriller starring Gadot, is slated for a Netflix release next year, and the actress is also working on a TV miniseries about the life of Hedy Lamarr.
